Propane Safety Information and Tips

Keep your propane-powered home safe and comfortable

propane safety

For many homeowners here in the Puget Sound region, propane keeps our homes warm, our water hot and our meals cooked. Whether you’re heating a cozy farmhouse in the Skagit Valley, using a gas range at your Camano Island vacation home, or powering a suburban home closer to Seattle, propane offers efficiency and versatility that’s hard to beat.

However, as with any energy source, using it responsibly is key. Understanding the basics of propane tank safety and leak detection isn’t just about following rules; it’s about ensuring the well-being of your family and your property. In this guide, we’ll walk you through why propane is a safe choice, how to detect issues early, and the immediate steps to take if you suspect a leak.

Why propane is a safe energy choice

One of the reasons we champion propane at American Distributing Company is its excellent safety profile. Propane production and equipment are subject to strict codes and regulations, which means that the systems installed in your home are built to high standards.

Propane tanks are roughly 20 times more puncture-resistant than tanks filled with ethanol, methanol or gasoline. Furthermore, propane has the lowest flammability range of any alternative fuel. It won’t ignite unless the source of ignition reaches 940ºF. If a leak does occur, propane vaporizes and dissipates into the air, meaning it won’t puddle like gasoline or contaminate soil and groundwater like fuel oil.

Detecting a leak: What does propane smell like?

Propane is naturally odorless and colorless. So how can you tell if there is a leak? Manufacturers add a chemical odorant called ethyl mercaptan to the gas. This additive gives propane a distinct, unpleasant smell often compared to rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray.

This strong scent acts as your built-in safety alarm. It’s designed to be noticeable enough to wake you from sleep or alert you even if you’re in another room. We recommend making sure that everyone in your household knows what this smell signifies.

While smell is the most obvious indicator, there are other signs to watch for.

  • Hissing sounds: a distinct hissing noise coming from your tank or gas lines
  • Dead plants: vegetation dying or turning brown directly over buried gas lines
  • Bubbles: bubbles forming when you apply soapy water to a connection point

Immediate steps to take if you smell gas

Knowing what to do in the moments after detecting a leak is critical. Panic is the enemy of safety, so having a clear plan is essential.

  1. Extinguish all flames immediately. Put out any smoking materials, candles or open flames.
  2. Do not create sparks. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones or cell phones. Even a tiny spark from a light switch could trigger an ignition.
  3. Leave the area. Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking.
  4. Shut off the gas. If it is safe to do so, turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank. To do this, turn the valve to the right (clockwise).
  5. Report the leak. Once you are a safe distance away from the potential leak, call American Distributing Company or 911 immediately.
  6. Stay away. Do not return to the building or area until an emergency responder or qualified service technician determines it is safe to do so.
  7. Get a professional inspection. Before you use any of your propane appliances again, your system must be checked to ensure that it is leak-free.

Maintaining your propane tank safety

Preventative maintenance is the best way to avoid emergencies. Regularly examining your propane tank for rust, dents or damage is a simple habit that pays off. During the wet Puget Sound winters, check that it remains on a stable base and that regulators are protected from snow and ice buildup.

We also recommend scheduling annual professional inspections. A certified technician can spot potential issues with lines, connectors and appliances that an untrained eye might miss.

Your peace of mind starts with a safe home. By familiarizing yourself with these propane safety protocols, you are taking a proactive step in protecting what matters most.
